The Coeur d'Alene River flows 37 miles (60 km) from the Silver Valley in Shoshone County into Lake Coeur d'Alene in Kootenai County in the state of Idaho. This river use to be called "Lead Creek" due to all the lead dumped in the river by the Bunker Hill Smelter in the Kellogg area. In the 1970's the smelters were forced to adopt environmental controls. Slowly the river has regained its health but there are still warnings about eating the fish, etc. Salmon is the main catch on this river. The upper portion of the river are popular for swimming and tub drifting and the lower portions are popular for water skiing, tubing, particular in the chain lakes off the river. An interesting note is the Coeur d'Alene River and its tributaries are featured in the movie Dante's Peak, along Wallace, Idaho.
