Route of the Santa Rita Water and Mining Company water system, 7.8 miles long.
For a hike narrative, see Betty Leavengood's "Hiking the Ditch" published in the Desert Leaf, April 1999 http://www.kentuckycamp.org/Links/ditch.htm. Some of the text of this map is taken (with permission) from the narrative, and from F. L. Orrell's "Chapter 6, Kentucky Camp and the Santa Rita Water and Mining Company", 1998.The marked route is of the water system, not the hiking trail. The water system consists of ditch and pipeline sections. The Arizona Trail follows the ditch sections (Temporal Gulch passage #4 at the south end, Santa Rita Mountains passage #5 at the north end). Follow the Trail in the pipeline sections where the Trail and water system diverge. The GPS route may not align with the actual path on the ground.
Use common sense when hiking in this remote area! Do NOT enter tunnels. Be careful near the penstocks, which are basically deep pits covered by timber and then dirt. These features are >100 years old, treat them with respect and care. Artifacts are protected by law, leave them in place.
Some photographs include a medium-large dog for scale. If you bring your dog, be very careful of venomous creatures.
